About the lighthouse:
The present lighthouse was built in 1846 to replace the prior one, which was destroyed in a devastating hurricane that swept across the Keys. In 1894, the tower was raised to its present 86 feet for better visibility for mariners navigating the waters off Key West. Overall lamp height is 24".

The Willet, in russet tones with accents of black and red, stands alone on his pretty native wooden platform as a solitary statement and warm country expression. Each shorebird is hand-carved and hand-painted as an original work of art, and no two are exactly alike. The Willet is about 9" long, and the lamp stands about 24" high overall. We've topped this one with a cream bone linen shade and brass ball finial. Three-way switch is provided.

Sandy Hook, built in 1764 by Isaac Conro, is the oldest surviving lighthouse structure in the United States; as such, it is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The octagonal structure has masonry walls that are 7 feet thick at the base and a tower that rises to a height of 85 feet. Overall lamp height is 25".
