Built in 1783 on an island in Boston Harbor, it sits on the site of the nation's first lighthouse, which was destroyed by the British in the Revolutionary War. In 1852, the present lighthouse tower was increased from 75 feet to 89 feet to make passage into Boston safer. Overall lamp height is 25".
